Programs at Drowne Road School

We are pleased to be able to offer a variety of classroom structures at Drowne Road School. During this time of year, we begin to hear questions about placement and different classroom models. Below is a list of programs that we are hoping to offer for our students. We expect all students to engage in meaningful learning experiences in all structures. In addition, students are instructed at their own academic levels of achievement in literacy and math in all structures available. All of these structures offer benefits to students.

Teaming:
This classroom structure would involve the students having different teachers provide instruction during the day based on the topic area of study. For example, the students might have one teacher for most of their day, but go to a different teacher for math or writing. Some goals of this model are for students to interact with more than one curriculum-based teacher. In addition, two teachers share the responsibility of student learning and resources. Another benefit is that your child will be known well by more than one adult, and teachers can focus on fewer instructional content areas. At times, the two classrooms would work together with two teachers leading instruction to allow the students the benefits of working with a larger group of peers.

Co-Teaching:
This classroom structure would involve two classrooms and two teachers working together as a fluid classroom community to engage in learning opportunities on a regular basis. Some goals of this model are for students to interact and develop relationships with a larger group of peers. In addition, two teachers share the responsibility of student learning and resources. Another benefit is that your child will have opportunities to connect often with more than one adult, as well as be known well by two teachers. Another benefit is the opportunities to utilize different instructional models with two teachers leading instruction.

Traditional:
This classroom structure would involve the students spending most of their day in one classroom environment and having one teacher provide instruction in all academic areas. Students would develop relationships with the students in their classroom community. One teacher would be responsible for providing instruction to this group of students. Even with the traditional structure, classrooms will engage in collaborative learning opportunities with other classrooms.
