                                                        I can do hard things.
                                                        I can do my best.
                                                        I can try again.
                                                        I can start right now.

Happy New School Year!  We look forward to another fun year of learning and growing.  Many years ago a parent described what he wanted from his children's school experience.  He said, "I want them to say I get to go to school, not I have to go to school."   I wish that for each of us, talking about school or work!  When someone says "I get to go to school/work" it opens our mind and heart to what one  can gain there.  When we say "I have to go to work or school" it changes the energy.  It becomes an obstacle - to sleeping in, playing ds, going to the beach, etc.  All those are great activities, too, but limiting in their own ways.  When we turn our language to one of choice, the possibilities are endless if not always easy.

....which is why I always start the year with kids (and adults, too) joining the Can*Do Club.  Even the kindergarten students know that saying "I can" makes it easier to do something  than saying "I can't."  We learn and practice the pledge to help when things get difficult.  Parents tell me years later, the Pledge is still on the frig, though the kids are in college.  They use it when they don't feel like doing something (perhaps again - like taxes or laundry).

We hope to encourage what is called in education-ese "academic stamina."  That's when things get hard and we feel like giving up.  It encourages trying again, learning from mistakes, doing our best and not procrastinating.  Kids tell me they say if over and over on the bus to swimming or taking a test.  Some kids come back year after year for a new card, long after they've left their elementary years.  Two years ago a middle school team showed up for cards at the start of the season.

We'll be sharing new thoughts and guidance happenings throughout the year.  We hope you'll send us feedback.  Also feel free to contact us with any questions, concerns and thoughts.

We'll be co-hosting with PTO 2 kindergarten parent coffees - a chance to meet with other parents and check in on how the year has started.  One will be in the a.m and one in the evening.  Information will be coming home soon.  Also watch for a short questionnaire about joining a new parent book club - details coming soon.

We've started a "blog" to foster communication in yet another avenue.  I started a comment on summer fun.  You can view and post to this blog by going to the following site:
