Classroom Guidance is Back in Session
November 2008

Safe, Kind and Gentle are the Guiding Words you might be hearing a lot at Mabel I. Wilson.  We use these three words to help children make good choices and to guide their behavior here at school.  These three words also form the basis of many our classroom guidance lessons.

This month our safety lesson will focus on "Community Helpers".  Using laminated photo cards, students will identify a number of the various community helpers found here at school.  We will talk about the different places these people can be found and in what types of situations students might need to ask them for help.  This activity will be hands on as students find a partner with a matching person card and together they identify where in the school they might find this person.

Our lesson on being gentle takes a look at  "Personal Space".  Using a variety of models, students will discover what personal space is all about.  We will explore the importance of our personal space, how sometimes the amount of space we need changes, and practice moving around in our own space bubbles. We will also figure out what to do if someone moves into our personal space.  Drawing upon on our experience in the "Community Helpers" lesson, we will identify who can help in these situations.

The last lesson in this three part series is our kindness lesson. Our lesson on kindness helps students in learning how to "Make New Friends". Students will learn the words they can use to make new friends and some tricks to finding a playmate out at recess, including having a list of names in our heads and looking for our favorite activities.  Students will practice introducing themselves to peers and brainstorm activities they can do with a friend at recess.  To help solidify their learning students will complete a "Make New Friends" worksheet to bring home.

Lastly, a new round of friendship groups will begin starting in December.  If you would like your child to participate, please call or email soon. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns or feedback at dawn_lane@msad51.org or 829-4825 ext. 152.

Sincerely,
Dawn Lane
