3rd Grade Classroom Guidance Curriculum
2008-2009
Lesson #1: Community Building
o Students will review the role of the School Counselor and visit the School Counseling Office
o Students will review classroom rules to be used during Classroom Guidance Time
o Students will play a Community Building Game
Lesson #2: You're Smarter than You Think: Multiple Intelligences Made Easy
o Students will identify what it means to be smart.
o Students will identify at least one of the 8 Smarts that is a strength for them.
Lesson #3: What's Your Learning Style?
o Students will learn about the different ways that people learn
o Students will complete 4 activities to help determine their personal learning style
Lesson #4: From Smarts and Styles to Study Skills
o Students will graph their Learning Style types to see how their class learns best
o Students will learn different study skills they can use based on their personal learning style
Lesson #5: Learning to Create More Strengths
o Students will identify an area in which they like to improve
o Students will identify strategies they can use to improve in that area
Lesson #6: Conflict Resolution Part 1
o Students will define the term bully
o Students will work in teams to identify what bullies do, why they do what they do, who they bully and how it might feel to be bullied
Lesson #7: Conflict Resolution Part 2
o Students will discuss friendship bullies and bystanders
o Students will work in teams to identify what bystanders and people who are being bullied can do
Lesson #8: Conflict Resolution Part 3
o Students will practice using the strategies they have learned for dealing with teasing/bullies
Lesson #9: Test-Taking 101
o Students will explore the Maine Educational Assessments
o Students will learn strategies they can use to do their best on a test
Lesson #10: Mini Stress Lesson
o Students will identify things they can do to help relieve stress and worry
Lesson #11: Career Lesson Part 1
o Students will identify activities they like to do in their spare time
o Students will group these activities into categories by graphing their responses as a class
Lesson #12: Career Lesson Part 2
o Students will brainstorm different jobs that people could do based on the activities they like to do in their spare time
Lesson #13: Moving on Up, Transitioning to NYMS
o Students will talk about the types of changes that people experience
o Students will identify things that have helped them to make changes in the past
